MANZANITA, OREGON 3-20-01

I had a great day today. To begin with, Julie picked me up at 730 for the Chamber breakfast meeting. After I gave a talk about my walk, things started happening. For one thing, the group started coming up with ideas on how to drive my cart to the next town so I wouldn't have to push it. Then this Chamber contacted the Chamber in Tillamook, 30 miles away and got them involved.
Then Julie called a motel in Manzanita, my next stop, and got me a room for free there. So after we all knew where I'd be tonight, Ken Meiser, Director of the Seaside Chamber, loaded up my cart & hauled it to the motel while I walked with just a small backpack.
They bought my breakfast at the Chamber meeting, plus they passed the hat & gave me some cash. At the end of the meeting, they drew someone’s name for a prize. One of the prizes was a free ticket to the Seaside Aquarium. I commented that that sounded like fun, and lo & behold the manager of the Aquarium was there and gave me a free ticket.
So after the meeting, I walked a few blocks to the Aquarium and spent some time there, then caught up with Julie back at the Chamber of Commerce. She drove me back to Cannon Beach, where I started walking to Manzanita.
The weather today was absolutely beautiful, and I thoroughly enjoyed walking without the cart. There were many areas on the highway where you can pull over and enjoy the scenery, and I stopped at every one of those. There are also many state parks along the coast, and ya know what? I have a much different opinion towards outhouses now than I did a month ago (the alternative to that being NOT MUCH!) As I was walking today, the view of the ocean was really spectacular.
I just got a phone call from a lady named Aggie Jones. She was giving a massage to a lady who was talking about me and said that I was looking for someone with a pickup truck to haul my cart to Rockaway tomorrow. Aggie said she could haul my cart for me! And tomorrow’s weather is suppose to be a carbon copy of today, so I'll really enjoy that. Not only that, but the lady who owns this motel has already started calling motels in Rockaway to see if she can find a place for me to stay. I plan on staying 2 nights in Rockaway.
This evening David Dillon from the North Coast Citizen Newspaper came & visited with me and took some pictures.
After that I walked a block away to a Chinese restaurant and had supper. Hope you'll all have a great evening! Take care – KB
