SALIDA, COLORADO 8-22-01

On Tuesday the Mountain Mail Newspaper interviewed me for an article, and the story came out in Wednesday mornings paper.
When I stepped outside to go eat breakfast, the maintenance man immediately recognized me from the article and picture in the paper and said his friend owns a rafting company and that he'd ask him if I could go on a rafting trip.
At noon several mennonite friends from Center Colorado (an hr or so away) came down to Salida and met me for lunch. We went down to the historical district of Salida and had lunch at Spaghetti Western.
While we were at the restaurant visiting, I mentioned that the other day when I walked up Monarch Pass that I had gone just over 2,000 miles so far on this trip. The owner of the restaurant interrupted and said "I thought you looked familiar!" and then said that lunch was on the house. We thought she meant only my lunch was free, but actually she meant all 8 of us! WOW! That was sure a surprise!
After lunch we browsed around and did some shopping. Around 5pm they headed back home.
Back at the motel, someone knocked on my door. It was a mother and daughter from Seattle. They had read the article in the paper and presented me with 6 rolls of film that they got for me to use on my trip. I am quite amazed with the friendliness and generosity of strangers.
I'll be here in Salida until Friday morning, when I'll head for Howard 11 miles away. If you want to call, the ph# is: 719-539-6689 Rm 218.
Y'all take care and have a great day! KB
