SALEM, ILLINOIS 1-15-02
Howdy Everyone!
It's happening again. When I was walking across California, Nevada, Utah and
Colorado, every day several people would stop and offer me a ride, or ask me
where my car broke down at. But when I was walking through Kansas &
Missouri, it was a rare day indeed to have one vehicle stop and check on me. In
fact, I can only think of a couple incidents all the way across KS & MO. Now
I've crossed over into Illinois, and this last week around 5-10 people have
stopped every day. That's encouraging. It's nice to know people are concerned.
Today I walked from Carlyle to Salem. The Mayor of Carlyle hauled my cart to
Sandoval, where I was planning on staying today, but it was only 1pm when I
arrived there, so I figured I could do 8 more miles to Salem. My cart was at the
City Hall in Sandoval, and the people there were so nice. They were impressed
with my walk and said they'd haul my cart to Salem whenever I decided if I was
staying or continuing on. I decided to press on, since it was early in the day.
I've got 2 mean-looking blisters on my left foot and that's really bugging me.
It's been awhile since I've had any blisters, and I'll be very happy if it's
quite awhile longer before I get any more. The Chamber of Commerce in Salem
worked out a deal with Super 8 Motel to give me 1 night free and then $25 a
night after that. This coming Saturday there's going to be a Health Fair in
Olney, IL. The Chamber in Olney has worked it out that Friday evening someone
will pick me up and drive me 50 miles east to Olney so I can participate in the
Health Fair there. They are comping me a booth and I'll display my map,
flip-chart and flyers, plus the Epilepsy Foundation offices in Kansas City and
St Louis have mailed numerous brochures and info to the Olney Chamber of
Commerce for me to use. It'll be a lot of fun! Then Saturday evening someone
will drive me back to Salem, where I'll spend the wkend and head out on Monday.
Now I know what I'm going to say next will be rude & crude, but y'know what?
My birthday is coming up. On Feb 7th I'll be 39. Here are some great ideas on
what you can get me: 1. A Wal-Mart gift certificate 2. $5.00 gift certificates
