Howdy Everyone!
I really enjoyed staying at a Boy Scouts camp north of Clare, Michigan.
The family I had met in Bay City made the connection for me.  The campground
is located 8 miles north of Clare, so when I got to Clare, they came and
picked me up.  There were several Boy Scout troops camping out there that
weekend, but they were all camping out in tents -- so I got the heated cabin
with showers!  The guys at the camp were terrific, and Dan, the camp director,
made me feel right at home.  He gave me the grand tour and introduced me to
several of the troops that were there camping.  The next morning he hauled my
cart to Evart while I walked there.
The Super 8 Motel let me stay there for $25, so I decided at that rate that
I could take a day off.  Usually when I talk at schools, I contact them the
day before and ask if I can speak in their PE classes or Health classes.  Even
on such a short notice, they're usually willing to let me speak.  Well, since
I didn't get to Evart until Sunday, I couldn't contact the schools in advance.
The High School is located right behind the Super 8 Motel, so at 7:30 I walked
into the school, visited with the principal, and then visited with the PE
teacher and Health teacher.  They were both willing to let me in, so on monday
I spoke in 3 PE classes and 3 Health classes.  After they heard me give my
first talk, they went around and invited other classes to come and join us, so
some of the classes I spoke in had around 80-90 students.  They gave me a
t-shirt at the end of the day with their High School logo on it.
On tuesday I headed for Reed City, and got into town in the afternoon.  I
had contacted the newspaper on monday, and they knew I was coming.  The lady
there had tried to make several contacts trying to find a place for me to stay
at, but to no avail.  She called everyone she could think of, such as the
churches, Ministerial Alliance, the Chamber of Commerce, the fire station, and
the motel, but no one wanted to get involved.  So I headed for the Osceola Inn
and payed $30.  After they heard my story, they gave me the money back and let
me stay for free.
It looks like I'll be getting into Ludington by friday or saturday -- in
plenty of time to catch the ferry on Monday.  I'm really looking forward to
the ferry ride, and will then start heading south through Wisconsin and Iowa.
Take care and have a great day!  KB
