Remember when I was walking through Maine and bumped into one of my high-school
classmates who was riding his motorcycle cross country? Well, Danny lives in Fredericksburg,
VA, and today he came and plucked me off the road down near Port Royal and took
me to his apartment in Fredericksburg. Isabel is suppose to hit tonight at midnight,
and by morning the height of the storm should be here. For Thursday and Friday
they're predicting 8-12" of rain for this area, so I'll be holed up here for
the next 2 days and then finish walking up here on the weekend. There's been quite
a bit of activity in the last few days. Farmers are cutting corn like mad right
now, because if they don't get it in today, then it'll be gone for good. Plus I
saw every kind of trailer, fifth wheel, and RV heading west today, and I also noticed
a lot of maintenance trucks -- salt trucks & trucks with snow blades on them
-- heading east. The traffic was bumper to bumper while I was out walking today.
A year ago I didn't even know where the Outer Banks were, and now I personally know
families who live out there. I called several of them up a couple days ago, and
they all said they're boarding up and heading off the island. Most of them wondered
if they'll have a house standing when they get back.
Today when Danny came and got me, I talked him into doing a little bit of sight-seeing.
We drove out to Stratford to see Stratford Hall Plantation, where Robert E. Lee
was born. We toured the Great House, saw the slaves quarters, enjoyed walking through
the gardens and checked out the Visitor's Center and Museum. I bought a book titled
"Stratford Hall Plantation." My dad's great great great grandfather was
Robert E. Lee's brother, Charles. Anyhow, I really enjoyed stopping there.
Take care and have a great day! KB
