Old Rag is a popular hiking
trail here in Virginia. With the summit at 3,268 feet it makes for a
total climb of 2,260 feet. A round trip to the summit is a 5.6 mile
hike or you can take the full circuit hike for a total of 7.2 miles.
A little misleading, with the shapes of the rocks, these falls were
actually quite a bit larger than they appear in this image. The one on
the left had a total drop of almost ten feet.
These little falls here are right off of the parking lot at the Old
Rag trail head.
Right at the top of these little falls was a nice little pond.
Just playing around I decided to free up some of the branches and
debris that was restricting the water flow. Just moments after
clearing it out the pond kind of went away as the water level dropped
a few feet. The smaller fall on the left stopped flowing and ran dry.
I didn't think about it until later but there's probably some very
angry beavers up there right about now.
