I have posted pictures of these strange plants before. Then they were from Virginia. These were taken in Oregon, back in 2001. One of the strangest plants I think I've ever seen, they appear to be a flower, but without any brilliant colors. But in fact , they are actually a type of fungus. 
Why they would have evolved like this is intriguing to me. I'm not sure myself, but one might speculate that a passing bee could presume it to be a flower and land on it. Realizing that it is not really a flower it would leave it alone and flay away. But not before it would unknowingly transport tiny spores along with it to other locations.

I have been told that these plants are somewhat rare, but I have found isolated clusters of them in the Blue Ridge mountains in Virginia and even more in the Cascade mountains in Oregon.
