* Lava Beds *

Touring around the Cascade Mountain range is one of my favorite things to do. Its so fascinating to see all of the results of the volcanic activity. In many places around the area you can easily run across lava beds such as these. Many with various different formations. Some, like these rough and rocky remains, where, as the lava cooled, it all broke up, and to others that are actually very smooth as the lava flows had cooled and remained intact. But its always amazing and even frightening to speculate what this incredible event might have looked like at the time of the eruptions. The devastation of the surrounding ecosystem must have been beyond belief. But as we have seen around Lassen Peak, in northern California, and as we can see around the Mt. St. Helens area in Washington, eventually the environment and nature does grow back and, like the mountainous regions of the Pacific Northwest, often to an incredibly beautiful and surreal place to behold and admire.
