* Small Gig * |
From playing clubs and gigs in Dallas,
back in the late 80's and 90's, to playing in church bands, some of the best
gigs I recall are just the small shows. Just me and the guitar. Now I have to
say that, with a full band, with a full club, its reasonably intoxicating to be
able to perform such extravagant pieces and appeal to a large crowd. But there's
also so many other issues that can make that type of venue more stressful. Well,
the drummer doesn't show up. The sound system is having problems. The owner is pressing
you to get started. People are asking to hear songs that you have never even
heard of. The drinking, smoking, and all the noise. And the fear that some of
your equipment might get damaged from some drunk falling into it. Of course that
could have been the lead guitar player himself.
But there's also something so much more personal and rewarding about doing a
small gig, with a small crowd. Of course the most rewarding part for me is the
fact that I don't have to share any of the money with the rest of the band. ha
ha.
This week I just played for a small crowd for a party at a law firm. Just me and a guitar. I guess it went over pretty well and I enjoyed playing and had fun and filled up on food.
