Howdy Everyone!
While I was still in Ludington, I called up the Manitowoc Fire
Dept. to see if I could stay there on monday night. Fire Chief Herzog said
sure, so that's where I headed for after the ferry ride. The fire station
is right across from the newspaper, so I stopped there and visited with a
reporter for awhile.
After Chief Herzog invited me in and showed me around, he called up
a woman who was involved with the Epilepsy Foundation and lives in this area.
She came out to the station and we visited for quite awhile. She has also had
epilepsy, but has been seizure-free for many years. Later, we went out and got a
bite to eat. I really enjoyed visiting with her.
Chief also called up the volunteer fire department in Valders, my
next stop. They were more than willing to put me up at the fire station,
and seemed eager to meet me. In the morning, Chief Herzog bought me
breakfast and hauled my cart to Valders for me, and I was on my way.
The group at Valders were there waiting for me, and they were a lot
of fun. When I got there, they had a bed all made up for me, which seemed
kindof odd since it's a volunteer fire dept. But they said that
occasionally people do sleep there, and tonight I was their guest. They
gave me a sweatshirt, said I could go to Willow Restaurant and eat for free,
called up the local newspaper, and hung around all evening visiting. They
then contacted the Police Chief at my next stop, Chilton, and also the fire
department in the next town, Pipe. In the morning they hauled my cart to
Chilton for me, and I was on my way.
Meanwhile, Police Chief Plantz was making arrangements for me, and
when I arrived in Chilton, the Thunderbird Motel had a room ready for me, and
the restaurant across the street would serve me 2 meals for free. As I was
walking into town, a reporter from the local paper caught up with me, and we
visited for awhile.
Here in Chilton, they have the Kaytee Avian Education Center, a
wonderful place to see and learn about birds. It's an educational center
that makes learning fun and fascinating. They have many birds to see,
including talking birds, baby birds, and a rainforest full of different kinds of
birds. Their gift shop has a lot of neat stuff too, such as birdhouses,
bird seed, books, and every kind of toy and knick-knack imagineable. I
really enjoyed stopping there. KAYTEE.com
The weather was pretty nippy this morning. It was only around
24 when I headed out, but after awhile I warmed up and took my jacket off.
We had a high of 42. The fall foilage is beautiful, and the frost on the
ground this morning made everything sparkle and shimmer. The next couple
days we're even suppose to get some snowfall, but with no accumulation, so they
say. Take care and have a great day! KB
