Howdy Everyone!
I had a great time last friday walking from Solon, IA to Iowa City.
Three
6th graders from Durant that I had met up in Dubuque, decided to join me for a
day and walk with me. Due to parent/teacher meetings, they didn't have
school
on friday, so they caught up with me in Solon and the four of us walked to
Iowa City. Caitlyn Snook, McKensey Reid, and Symone Silva joined me for a
day, and we had a great time!
It was a lot of fun to watch those girls! They were giving
great big,
full-extension waves and smiles to all the vehicles driving by, and the
drivers response was hilarious! Most of the drivers would give a great big
wave back and toot their horns at us. One couple in a convertible with the
top down gave great big waves up over the windshield! Plus those girls had
every big-rig truck honking at us -- they were so much fun to be with!
Plus they were picking up every little odd thing off the shoulder
of the
road. They found a couple different keys, a padlock (that didn't match the
keys,) a bent-up fork, and different pieces of metal and latches. They
also
saw lots of rubber from blown tires, and an over abundance of road kill.
And I was busy making them stop at every little signpost or spot to
take
their pictures! (You can see their pictures at www.eyie.org or
www.dannygalixy.com) I took pictures of them on a bridge, by signs that said
how far we'd walked, and at one point they climbed up on some round bales of
straw and I took a picture of them up there!
For all the waving, stopping and picking up stuff, and stopping and
taking
pictures, and through all their constant jabbering, we made pretty good time
and got in to Iowa City in the afternoon. Caitlyns dad was there to meet
us,
and we all went out to McDonalds. My mom had recently mailed me several
McDonalds $5 gift-certificates, so we each used one of those and had lunch
(thanks Mom.)
We dropped the film off before we went to McDonalds, and picked the
pictures up afterwards. They turned out great, and I got double print so
they
could keep a copy. They're going to do a presentation at school about
their
walk with me, so that'll be pretty neat. We all had a great time, and I
thoroughly enjoyed their company and enthusiasm. It was really a great
day!
Today I'll be heading from Iowa City down to Kalona, where I'll be
giving a
talk at a Lioness meeting. They say Kalona is an Amish community, so that
should be interesting. Take care and have a great day! KB
