* Speed & Motion Blur *

A very simple effect, the "motion blur" can be used on shots like this to distinguish and emphasize motion that the camera didn't seem to show.

 Although the original image was taken at a speed of over 90 mph, the shutter speed was so high that the background remained very well in focus. As a matter of fact, the shutter was so fast that you could actually see individual links of the motorcycle chain in the original, full-size image. Now this is normally a good aspect and feature to be able to capture every moment of the action in clear detail. But what if you really wanted that look and feel of the action and speed?

How I did it;
I highlighted and masked out my friend Andrew, and his bike from everything else in the image. I reversed the mask so that everything in the picture was masked, except for the bike and rider. Then I performed the motion blur effect on the image. One thing I didn't expect was the slight blurred edges of the rider and the bike that also showed up. Something I could easily alleviate, if the necessity ever presented itself.

So, now he actually does looks like he could have been going 90 miles per hour. Even though he really was.
