* Kids in Baja * |
This is a picture of a few kids I ran across out in the middle of Baja. I gave them each one of the small stuffed toys that I kept a stock of.
As I was riding up through Baja I got
about half way up the 900 mile long ride back to the states and was in need of
refueling. Since there seemed to be no signs of civilization for hundreds of
miles, I was beginning to get a little worried. But road signs were showing a
town just ahead, with a gas station. But as I got to the town, and found the gas
station, I also discovered that it had been closed for quite some time. All that
I could find was an old guy selling gas out of the back of his van. Not trusting
the situation, I rode on. About ten miles up the highway, out in the middle or
nowhere, I found a small shack that was evidently some type of restaurant.
Inside I found a lady giving a young woman a haircut, and two small children
playing. They didn't speak English, so with minimal communication, I asked them
how far up the road I could find fuel. They told me that was approximately 100
kilometers and, after doing a quick calculation in my head, I realized I
wouldn't make it. So I decided to head back to buy the gas from the old man.
But before I did, I called the two children outside, to the bike, where I dug
out a handful of my stuffed toys and let them pick two of them.
