* "Again with the Saguaro's" * |
"Doesn't this guy ever get tired of
talking about and showing pictures of the saguaro cactus?"
Hey, I'm in the desert, I'm running out of interesting stuff.
Heh heh, just kidding.
But this is a shot from the Saguaro
National Park, here in Tucson. Although you might not think it from this picture
or a drive through the park, the saguaro is endangered and has depleted
drastically in numbers over the years. This tough and resilient plant does have
its weaknesses. Since they can take up to 75 years before they even develop a
side shoot and around 200 years to full growth, they are very slow growing and
very slow propagating. So, aside from diseases and
natural elements and conditions that have destroyed and dwindled their numbers,
progress and development also continues to be a
huge threat.
It is now illegal to harm them in any way and special precautions must be taken
when any housing and road construction demands for their relocation.
