* Barrel Cactus Fruit *

Although they look like tiny pineapples, the fruit from the Arizona Barrel Cactus are only about a couple if inches tall, not including the dead leaves on top.
Although the fruit can be eaten, it just doesn't taste all that great. The rind has a slightly sour, almost lemon flavor, but a little slimy. The insides are hollow with what looks like poppy seeds, but again, they don't taste all that good either.
I have noticed some of the small rodents like to climb up on the barrel cactus and pick the fruit and run away with them.
