Quite a few years ago I took a random shot of my good friend, Richard. Later I was experimenting with masking and textures and such and made a big mess of Richard and the whole office. But it taught me quite a few techniques.
How I did it:
Most graphic programs have a "magic wand" type of masking. When you
click on an area, specifically an area with similar or solid textures and
colors, it will mask everything in that specific color or background. For
example, like many movies where they film over a green or blue background, it
makes it easy for them to fill the background in with something else. In this
example here though, the office was filled with a variety of objects all of
different colors and textures. With the software you can select options to
adjust the threshold of the procedure.
Then, after masking an object I just looked through the various textures and
bitmaps and other images I had at my disposal and started pasting them into each
and every masked area. You can find similar things all throughout my graphical
image archives.
